Among the top 10 fastest growing occupations in the U.S., 2000–2010, computer software engineers ranked first, and medical assistants ranked 10th, with no data science in between.

In the 2022–2032 version of the same list, data science ranks 3rd, while computer software engineers didn’t make it to the top-ten list.

My point?

Data science only recently became a phenomenon.

Want people to build myths around a thing?

Make that thing popular.

It happens with famous people; myths that make them seem larger-than-life, and those that belittle them. It also happens with ideas, new tech and fields of study. The crypto and NFT booms were accompanied by myths, and so also programming and the internet.
