Google Goes God-mode: Will No Longer Make Research Papers Publicly Available

Mistakes are things you learn from, but they can also make your rivals catch up with you.

Google fell victim to the last part of that sentence.

Despite being a big cheese in the AI technology, Google has for more than a decade dragged its feet on launching an AI chatbot.

OpenAI, once obscure and toothless, moved first. They released ChatGPT and now Google is biting real hard to offset the grounds covered by ChatGPT:

  • They flashed LaMDA, an AI chatbot, before the publics’ eyes, with its engineer claiming it is sentient.
  • They released Bard, another chatbot, specifically made to rival ChatGPT.
  • Then in their recent search updates included search results from generative AI on the SERP.

If you’ve got a smartphone, internet connection, and is concerned about technology, these moves by Google are the moves you were made to see, but they weren’t the only ones.

Back in February 2023, Google went god-mode. They made a very decisive policy change on the disclosure of research papers by its researchers, and there was a reason for that.
