Let me tell you a story about Michael Phelps.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the former competitive swimmer needed one gold medal to do what no Olympian has ever done in the history of the Olympics:

  • Win 8 gold medals in a single Olympiad.

As he dove in during the 200m fly, his goggle started to leak. With each stroke the goggle was letting in more water, and by the time he had just few length of the pool left, he was swimming completely blind.

That was random and unexpected, but it turned out Phelps had factored that in.

He and his coach had talked about the possibility of his goggle malfunctioning and what to do under such circumstance.

The solution was counting his strokes. Phelps knew exactly how many strokes he needed to get from one end of the pool to another.

He made history.

Chaos Monkey

When servers go down, customers are affected, and companies panic.

Netflix servers serve a high percentage of internet traffic due to their video streaming service. Server downtimes is their biggest nightmare.
