Hearing that Elon Musk changed Twitter’s logo to “X” made me wonder what will happen to the old one.

Is it still a trademark, or it is now free to use so anyone can turn it into an NFT and sell it for millions of dollars like that Jack Dorsey’s first tweet?

I know what happens when a company or an individual trademarks a name or logo. Among other things, they determine how their trademarks can be used by others and can pursue legal actions against anyone who uses them in any way they consider demeaning.

But change happens. To quote Warren G. Bennie: “In life, change is inevitable. In business, change is vital.” Businesses rebrand, and this can involve a change of name —like BackRub changing to Google and Cadabra changing to Amazon. Or change of logo; Apple, Nokia, Shell, and many others have undergone logo changes. Now Twitter too.

What happens when companies change their logos? Here are the things I found out:

Trademarked and Non-trademarked Logos

Broadly speaking, it is typical to see companies change into variations of their logo, not so many have completely changed their logos. A complete change of logo usually comes with a name change, and some notable companies have gone down this lane:
